On October 6, at the 9th Y. L. Taiwan Devotion Award, the Y.L. Lin Hung Tai Education Foundation awarded Dr. Doris Brougham posthumously a special Lifetime Achievement Award to honor her lifelong dedication to English education in Taiwan and efforts to bridge the rural/urban gap. The Y.L. Lin Hung Tai Public Welfare Trust made a donation of NT$21 million to the Doris Brougham Rural Areas Education Project. The Foundation hopes to inspire others to join Brougham’s mission of providing English education to children in rural areas for years to come. ORTV Chairman Dr. Simon Hung received the award and thanked the Trust for their 3-year commitment of NT$21 million to provide English-learning educational resources for children in rural areas. He expressed: “We are working together! Let’s love Taiwan together.”
Hualien was Brougham’s first hometown in Taiwan when she came to Taiwan in 1951. Brougham developed deep connections with the indigenous people and people living in rural areas. She saw a great need to bridge the rural- urban divide through education. In 1999, Brougham started regularly sending English teachers to Hualien to conduct bilingual character-building camps. In 2014, Studio Classroom launched the Lucy Says Learning System designed to help elementary school-aged children learn English through fun, interactive games, songs and videos. Since 2015, more than 100 afterschool programs and elementary schools in rural areas around Taiwan have used the Lucy Says Learning System.
