Children's Day Camps

StudioClassroom teachers often take an active part in outside summer activities. Vickie Pettis and Hazel Johansen met with local leaders at a Taipei press conference on July 4th, kicking off the day camps sponsored by Cathay Children's Camps and World Vision.

The children came from poor families located in the remote areas of Nantou, Pingdong, Hualien and Taoyuan are beneficiaries of World Vision . Most of the children had never before been to Taipei and had relatively scarce educational resources. Lively songs and stories in English helped break down barriers of shyness as children met their radio and TV teachers face to face. Vickie and Hazel performed English sing-along songs as well as a bilingual puppet show, putting these fidgety children at ease as they made their debut to use a fork and a knife during a Western-style meal.

Linda Way and Andrea Brodersen participated in 2 special day camps for these children. They taught English childrenˇ¦s songs and played games with them. The children enjoyed the activities and the instructors very much. These activities helped the children to overcome some of the most generally seen barriers in learning English.
