Twelve-year-old Doris Brougham eagerly responds to an appeal: ¡§I¡¦ll go to China as soon as I¡¦m old enough.¡¨ At the age of 21, she was finally old enough. In 1948 she boarded a ship for China. A year later, she evacuated to Taiwan due to the war raging on the mainland of China. Doris found herself on the East Coast of Taiwan, ministering to the tribal people there.



through a probing question. ¡§How can I reach all these people?¡¨ The answer is laid upon Doris¡¦s heart: ¡§Radio.¡¨ In those days, no Gospel radio programs were broadcast in Taiwan. Doris purchased a reel-to-reel tape recorder and, with the help of some Chinese friends, began producing programs in her living room. These programs told about the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Doris had to carry the program tapes¡Xand the tape recorder¡Xon her bicycle to the radio stations for broadcast.


by the founding of Overseas Radio Inc. in 1960. Leland and Dorothy Haggerty joined Doris and a group of dedicated Chinese Christians in Taipei. Two years later, the ministry aired its first English-teaching radio program, Studio Classroom. Each morning, six days a week, students joined Doris in the studio at 6:00 a.m. for the day¡¦s recording. The broadcasts often featured guest teachers, including Chinese educator Lin Yu-Tang, author of My Country, My People.




by taking the Gospel to television. In 1963, the Taiwan government chose to air ¡§Heavenly Melody,¡¨ a group of singers and musicians, for its one religious broadcast. Madame Chiang Kai-Shek was among the faithful viewers. Throughout the island, the melodic strains of Christian praise were heard by televised broadcasts received in public locations, including train stations and Buddhist temples, traditional Chinese community gathering sites. Overseas Radio & Television, Inc. was established.

by faithful execution of the divinely-appointed opportunities that come our way. Acknowledging that the vision to reach Chinese with the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ comes from God and is sustained by Him alone, Overseas Radio & Television embarks upon its ministry in the 21st century with a strong sense of purpose. The vision born in the heart of a child is still guiding the ministry of ORTV.
